We live in exciting days and the Elim Church in Malton and Norton, and the beautiful Ryedale area of North Yorkshire, is moving forward with a clear sense of purpose. A process of change is under way and we are constantly reviewing and revising our patterns of ministry.

We are committed to the unchanging nature of the Gospel; Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. We look for culturally relevant ways to present this unchanging and exciting message.

Elim:Ryedale is a name that was adopted late in 2003 to reflect what we believe to be our calling in God. On this site are details of the breadth of ministry and service in which the church is involved.

The ministry operates through a number of different outlets. We have our own building, the Greengate Centre, in Greengate, Malton, which is used for various church meetings and services to the local community.  Our Sunday worship services are held at Norton College, Beverley Road, Norton, where, at present, there is sufficient room and ample free parking. Trinity Methodist Church, Commercial Street, Norton, is where XTalk, our young people, meet on Tuesday evenings during school term.  In addition, there are several small fellowship groups which meet generally on a weekly basis in homes scattered around Ryedale.

We trust you will enjoy your visit to our site. If this raises any questions in your mind, please do not hesitate to contact us;  we would love to hear from you.

If you live in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, or visit the area, you are very welcome to join us. We trust that we may have the privilege of welcoming you to our Church.

May God bless and keep you and all who are precious to you.

Thank you for visiting our site! Happy surfing!

When we talk about Church many people may think of a Church building, but really the church is the body of believers who meet together in the building. So to cover both understandings we will let you know about both Churches.

The Church Building

Elim:Ryedale owns the Greengate Centre in Malton, however the Church out grew the permises and it is now used for the Churches administrative offices and smaller mid-week meetings.

The Church Body

As Greengate has now been out grown, the Church meet at Norton College on Sundays. The College offers great facilities, with a large hall and separate rooms for G:Force.

Click on the sub menu to find out some interesting history of the Church, or you can find out what our Child policy is.

A real Christian is someone who has made Jesus the Lord of his life – the No.1 priority

Why make Jesus your priority? Because Jesus made us his top priority – he gave his life for us. And in exchange for our commitment to him, he gives us everything that really matters. We can’t sit on the fence. Jesus himself says in the Bible that he will spit ‘lukewarm’ or halfhearted followers out of his mouth! (Revelation 3:15-16),

Not much room for complacency for any of us there. But why bother, you might say; because we need saving. A drowning man would be stupid to say to the rescuer holding out a hand to save him, “I’ll think about putting all my trust in you… one day”, or “Well, I’m not sure I need saving really, I don’t know if I’m going to drown or not”, or “I’m not sure you are the real rescuer. I’ll wait and see what other people say.” But saving from what? Everyone has made mistakes and done wrong. “All have sinned”, says the Bible. God will not allow ANY sin into heaven, so people must be completely ‘clean’. But hang on a minute, you say, no one’s perfect – so how can we ever get into heaven? And you’d be perfectly right. No one can get into heaven on their own merit. God does not work on a “Do the best you can” basis. He doesn’t weigh up our good works and bad works and see if the scales tip in the right direction. He demands that full and proper justice be done.

No one in court could expect a judge to waive the sentence for any crime on the basis of the prisoner promising to do the best he can. The brilliant principle on which a holy yet merciful God operates is substitution. In the days of corporal punishment, identical twin boys attended a school in Glasgow. One had a weak heart, but few people knew about it. One day the ill twin kicked a ball through the window of the headmaster’s office. The other twin bravely volunteered to go to the headmaster, taking his brother’s place, because he knew the punishment would be severe. He received three painful whacks and on the third one the pain was so intense that he broke into tears.

But he was glad because he knew he had saved his brother from it all. The boy became a substitute, taking his twin’s punishment. This is what Jesus did when he died on the cross. He willingly allowed himself to be killed, so that we can live. But you must ask him to become your personal rescuer or Saviour, otherwise the death of Christ cannot apply personally to you. Good medicine on a bedside table is no use to a dying man unless he takes it. In a humble prayer, ask Jesus to become your Saviour today. You can follow these simple guidelines….

How to become a Christian?

Following Jesus will change your life for ever, but the actual steps you take to begin are as easy as ABC. If you would like to know Jesus for yourself, be certain that your sins are forgiven and that one day you will go to heaven, follow these three easy steps, talking to God in your own words…

A - Admit that you have done wrong. The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

B - Believe that Jesus died so that you can be forgiven, and ask God to forgive you: “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16); “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9).

C - Commit yourself to living God’s way from now on. Jesus said, “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Following Jesus is not always an easy road, but it’s the best decision you will ever make!

No Fellowship Groups
Last Wednesday saw the start of our 6 part series called ‘What do we believe?’  We looked as ‘Membership’ and notes are available for those who were not able to attend.  Can I encourage everyone to make this a priority over the next few weeks?  It is important that we spend time consolidating what we believe so that we are equipped for the next season.  This is especially important for those who have recently started to attend Elim Ryedale.

We are in the process of restructuring the groups in the light of how we make disciples.  Jesus said we should go and make disciples and the group leaders are meeting on July 12th to continue to explore how we can make disciples more effectively.

Go Ape! – Saturday 21st July
Bryan Barrett is organising a trip to Go Ape in Dalby Forest.  To secure the morning we need to know numbers as soon as possible.  We aim to book for 10.00 am and get fish and chips on the way home.  It is recommended that we leave 3 hours for the course and the cost is £25 per person.  This would be a great event to invite colleagues from work or your neighbours.  If you are interested please see Bryan or Andy.  It would also help if we can find drivers who already have a Dalby Forest pass.

G-Force
This is a great ministry, but we need more helpers especially through the summer.  Please see Becky Ibbotson for more details.

Evangelism Training
We had great teaching from Gary Gibbs last weekend and thank you for all who stayed in the afternoon.  We bought several extra book as and have recorded all the teaching which is available on CD.  Please see Andy for your copy.

Summer Programme
Still looking for suggestions for the Sunday afternoons in August!  Where shall we go???

Thank you to all who worked so hard to make the youth weekend at Wyedale such a great success.

THE BIBLE

We believe the Bible, as originally given, to be without error, the fully inspired and infallible Word of God and the supreme and final authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

THE TRINITY

We believe that the Godhead exists co-equally and co-eternally in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and that these three are one God, sovereign in creation, providence and redemption.

THE SAVIOUR

We believe in the true and proper deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His real and complete humanity, in His sinless life, in His authoritative teaching, in His substitutionary and atoning sacrifice through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, in His heavenly intercession and in His second advent to receive His Church.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe in the deity of the Holy Spirit who proceeds from the Father and the Son, and the necessity of His work in conviction of sin, repentance, regeneration and sanctification, and that the believer is also promised an enduement of power as the gift of Christ through the baptism in the Holy Spirit with signs following. Through this enduement the believer is empowered for fuller participation in the ministry of the Church, its worship, evangelism and service.

MANKIND

We believe in the universal sinfulness of all men since the Fall, rendering man subject to God's wrath and condemnation.

SALVATION

We believe in the necessity for salvation, of the repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by which the sinner is pardoned and accepted as righteous in God's sight. This justification is imputed by the grace of God because of the atoning work of Christ, is received by faith alone, and is evidenced by the Fruit of the Spirit and a holy life.

THE CHURCH

We believe in the spiritual unity and the priesthood of all believers in Christ and these comprise the universal Church, the Body of Christ.

THE MINISTRY

We believe in the ministries that Christ has set in His Church, namely, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, and in the present operation of the manifold gifts of the Holy Spirit according to the New Testament.

THE ORDINANCES

We believe in the baptism of believers by immersion in water in obedience to the command of Christ, and in the commemoration of Christ's death by the observance of the Lord's Supper until His return.

THE COMMISSION

We believe that the gospel embraces the needs of the whole man and that the Church is therefore commissioned to preach the gospel to the world and to fulfil a ministry of healing and deliverance to the spiritual and physical needs of mankind.

THE COMING KING

We believe in the personal, physical and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to reign in power and glory.

THE FUTURE STATE

We believe in the resurrection of the dead and in the final judgement of the world, the eternal conscious bliss of the righteous and the eternal conscious punishment of the wicked.

I had to wait until I was 33 before I found out that God loved me as an individual and wanted to have a personal relationship with me.

My second marriage had ended in failure after the birth of my third son. My second husband did exactly what the first had done went off with another woman. I thought I was a spiritual‚ person. I was involved in Buddhism, Rudolf Steiner‚s Anthroposophy and lived a back-to-nature‚ lifestyle in the depths of the countryside. But no new age philosophy could help the pain, depression and rejection that I felt. It was the that Jesus revealed His love to me through reading the bible; the last place I thought I would find anything relevant to me today.

He said I am the way the truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through me, Jesus who is both man and God was nailed to the cross to pay for my wrongdoing, but He had done no wrong so death could not hold Him and he rose from the dead. HE IS ALIVE TODAY. I came to experience His love for myself. All the rejection, anger and bitterness that was eating away in me like cancer was healed.

I remember the day my ex-husband came to visit. Jesus had enabled me to forgive him and I was able to relate to him as an ordinary person.

I could never have done that myself. My relationship with God, through Jesus Christ continues to grow and deepen. His love is constant; His power is awesome. Life is abundant with HIM.

How about you?

Claire

The Church, with its administration base in Malton, was formed as a direct consequence of the 'drawing room' meetings held by a local farmer's wife, when the noted Pentecostal evangelist and pioneer Smith Wigglesworth visited the area.

One of the young parlour maids listened to the preaching of this 'great-heart' and was affected by the teaching.  She then infected her brother and her sweetheart so that by 1940 there was a small church in Malton.

In the beginning the church led a rather nomadic way of life, but in 1958 the building, a former Unitarian Church (now The Greengate Centre) which is currently used as the Administration centre, was purchased. The main hall is still used for most mid-week church meetings and services to the local community. Sunday services are held at Norton College.

It is low-key, friendly and fun – and is supported by all the main Christian denominations.

There will almost certainly be a course running near you.  Why not take this opportunity to explore the meaning of life?

At Elim:Ryedale we have a long history of talented worship teams, and the current worship teams are no exception. The emphasis has certainly not changed and with training and teaching it will only get better!

There is a growing desire within the church (worldwide) for worship that touches God. Elim:Ryedale is no different! We want quality, effective worship that God can engage with, and so we have worship based teaching to look deeper at worship and other related subjects. We also plan to have special guests and special practical sessions. These are held on the first Thursday of the month at the Greengate Centre.   All are welcome!

The worship ministry for the Church is headed up by Ed Osborne and Rick Jesse. Ed is an accomplished musician and worship leader, and Rick has been leading worship for five years. Most musical genres are evidenced and there is a definite aim to draw nearer to the heart of God - to worship him and enjoy him for ever.

Hi there and welcome. Thanks for checking out this very important element of our church.

So, who is X-Talk for? What is it? Where does it take place? and ................... Why does it exist?

Who?

For young people aged 11 – 18.

What?

It is an opportunity for young people to make friends, have fun, begin and grow their faith, be involved and find an answer to the ‘so what?’ question.

Where?

At present we get together at the Trinity Methodist Church premises in Commercial Street, Norton

When?

On a Tuesday evening starting at 7.30pm and finishing at 9.00pm.

Why?

Our reason for existing is, ‘To show young people God’s love;  to prepare them for a lifetime journey with Jesus;   to share with believers the joy of putting God first, so that they can bring others.’

Recent activities have included:

A n evening ten pin bowling;  a visit to the local cinema;  weekends away at Wyedale, near Scarborough and ‘The Gathering’ at West Bromwich;  a quiz night;  regular games evenings;  a 20 hour Bike-a-Thon;  a sponsored Treasure Hunt and, last, but by no means least, a brilliant performance of ‘Saving Sheriff Wylie.’  Many more exciting activities are being planned for the future.

Recent issues discussed include:

Growing up;   Finding Christianity in films;  Personal  relationships;  Identifying the enemy;  Choices;   Lifestyles and The Shock of Your Life!

There are many hundreds of churches networked within Elim. They range from small groups recently launched to the 3,000 strong Metropolitan church in Belfast and the 17,000 strong Kensington Temple in London.

Elim History

The Elim Pentecostal Church was founded in 1915 by a Welshman in Monaghan, Ireland. George Jeffreys was an outstanding evangelist and church planter. He had a Welsh Congregational background, was strongly influenced by the Welsh Revival of 1904, and was introduced to Pentecost by an Anglican vicar, Rev Alexander Boddy of Sunderland.

Elim Today

Elim is committed to growth. Its highest priority, however, is in 'building bigger people'.  Elim believes that, as its members discover their destiny and are equipped to fulfil God's kingdom priorities through spiritual maturity, numerical fruitfulness will ensue. This is achieved through discipleship programmes, cell groups and the ongoing ministry of the church.

For more information on Elim, visit the Elim Headquarters' website by clicking here.

Two Old Market Towns - Malton and Norton

Malton has a population of 4000 plus, and been the historic centre of Ryedale since Roman times. North of the Roman fort site, is the original town of Old Malton, with ancient stone houses and quaint dwellings in the centre of which stands the most beautiful Gilbertine Priory in use in England - St Mary's. The building of a Norman Castle near to the river crossing encouraged the growth of a second town, the modern day Malton.

Over the river and joining Malton is Norton on Derwent. The two towns are really one but the locals have a keen sense of locality with both insisting they come from either Malton or Norton. Much building has taken place in the last one hundred years, mostly residential, but many old shops and houses in the town centre have been demolished to build new shops.

•  Alongside Farming , brewing is a traditional Malton industry. At one time nine breweries flourished below the main street to the Derwent, now only one, 'Malton Brewery Company' survives. At one time it was said that you could see two pubs from any point in the town.

•  The neighboring town of Norton is famous as a centre for training racehorses. Thoroughbreds are often seen on their way to and from the gallops on Langton Wold.

•  Around 2000 years ago, the Romans built a fort where Malton now stands and many of the artifacts found at the site can be seen in Malton Museum , situated in the town square

At Elim:Ryedale we believe that young people are important. Important to us and important to God. We aim to provide an environment where young people can meet with God and develop their relationship with Him.

The age of the young people involved in Sunday XTalk is between 11 and 14. We meet after the morning worship session and during our time together aim to grow an understanding of what God has told us in a way that can be related to your everyday lives.

You are invited to join us, just turn up and know that you are already welcome.

If you have any questions then please contact me, Jeff Bentley, through our ‘Contact Us’ page or via e-mail at: xtalk@elimrydale.net

Noah’s Flood covered the whole earth

\"After

Many Christians today think the Flood of Noah’s time was only a local flood, confined to somewhere around Mesopotamia. This idea comes not from Scripture, but from the notion of ‘billions of years’ of Earth history.

But look at the problems this concept involves:

','

Belief in a world-wide Flood, as Scripture clearly indicates, has the backing of common sense, science and Christ Himself.',1,3,0,7,'2007-03-30 14:05:24',69,'','2007-05-28 16:40:10',69,0,'0000-00-00 00:00:00','2007-03-30 13:57:46','0000-00-00 00:00:00','','','pageclass_sfx=\nback_button=\nitem_title=1\nlink_titles=\nintrotext=1\nsection=0\nsection_link=0\ncategory=0\ncategory_link=0\nrating=\nauthor=\ncreatedate=\nmodifydate=\npdf=\nprint=\nemail=\nkeyref=\ndocbook_type=',21,0,1,'','',0,25); INSERT INTO `jos_content` VALUES (47,'Testimony of the Month','testimony2','I am now 27 and this is my testimony about how the Lord changed me during the 13 years following giving my life to him.

In my teens I was very shy and lacked confidence.  It was very hard for me to talk to people I did not know and even now I remember how I became covered in red-faced embarrassment when I did not know what to say.
','

My mum introduced me to Jesus when I was 8 but it was at church some years later that I really began to follow him.  Five years ago I was married but I was still very low in self confidence and worrying about the embarrassment I would display when I did not know what to say to people. I hated feeling like that.  It was awful and I am sure that only I knew the real pain.

I had trained as a beauty therapist and in 2003 I opened my own salon as a result of a chance remark by my neighbour.  This was wonderful and I remember dedicating it to God’s use and praising him for it.  After all my prayers for confidence the Lord had dropped me in at the deep end!  I used to shake with nervousness as I was brought face to face with new clients every day, and this lasted for 2 years or so before it began to ease a little.

My relationship with the Lord was, well, OK, but I would often backslide and miss my daily quiet time with him.  I remember praying that he would help me to live a better life for him and to be closer to him.

At work the confidence problem eased but I still found it very hard to talk to people who were forward and who displayed a lot of self confidence.  I would feel very small and my words would often become jumbled.  My constant prayer was that the Lord would give me confidence.

One day after a church meeting I decided that I had had enough of all this.  I wanted to be more like Jesus.  I decided it was time to try harder for God and to live every part of my life for him.  So I bought some books to help me to read and understand the Bible and I began to have a regular and meaningful quiet time with him.  Soon I noticed a change.  No longer was I worried and embarrassed about speaking to others.  I had confidence and that confidence was in the Lord.  He was changing me through his Word and his Holy Spirit was having a big impact on my life.  I could not have done it on my own and I realised the futility of trying.

So now I am confident in my relationship with God and with people.  The thought of going back to the way I was fills me with fear.  In every part of my life I now want to ensure that all the glory goes to him who so graciously rescued me from despondency and embarrassment and set my feet on the narrow but confident road.

“For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over.  The Lord your God did to the Jordan just what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.  He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.”  Joshua 4:23-24

Adam or Ape?

\"Adam

This illustration portrays the consequences of building your thinking on the Bible or on man's opinions. If Biblical history is true and all people are descendants of one man Adam, whom God created just a few thousand years ago, then this means that every person is accountable to the God of Creation.  Because God created us, He owns us, and therefore has a right to set the rules.  Because God is the absolute authority, it means He determines what is right and what is wrong.

','

But if you believe that life arose as a result of natural processes and that all humans are descendants of animals (and ultimately back to the first life that evolved in some primeval soup), then humans are accountable to no one but themselves.  Thus people have a right to set their own rules about life (if they can get away with this in their society). In this system, all morality is relative—there are no absolutes (which in actuality is the one absolute which these people can hold!).
Do you have a chimp in your family tree?

I had arrived!  After years of study and pushing forward I had become an extremely successful businessman.  With annual earnings of well over £300,000, a magnificent 5 bedroomed Cotswold stone house, four cars in the garage and a large heated swimming pool in the acre of grounds - yes, I could say with confidence and a certain amount of pride “I have arrived”.

The “big but” was that I was very unhappy.......

','I was spending too much time on my business interests, neglecting my family and neglecting my relationship with God.  OK, I held several responsible positions within my local Anglican church but the truth was that I had no quality time on my own with God.  Everything I did for Him had become a duty.

Then God stepped back into my life with power and love.  I was at Spring Harvest that year and He spoke to me in no uncertain way through the mouth of Jim Graham, a renowned Baptist preacher.  “You have been weighed in the scales and found wanting.  Your kingdom will be taken away and divided amongst the Medes and the Persians.”

To cut a long story short I soon found myself penniless, looking for a home for me and my family to live in, and wondering where the next meal was coming from.  These were desperate times; literally from riches to rags in the twinkling of an eye.

The “big but” was that God was faithful!  He fulfilled my every need at just the right time.  He provided a home and all the necessities of life.  He led me to a government official who was supposed to investigate my financial collapse but who simply wanted to talk about Jesus.  (After four hours of conversation this lovely man gave his life to the Lord whilst sitting at his desk in his very austere office).  The Lord led me to a greater understanding of who He is and how much He loves me.  The Lord led me to a greater understanding of the place of money and power in His kingdom.

He has graciously given me everything I need and I say with confidence and no pride at all “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!”  Thank you, Lord, I am extremely happy.
